 After an illustrious career with the Royal navy, Alexander was appointed governor of The Virginia colony in 1710. He supervised many projects as well as building the first iron works in America.  \he returned to England in 1724 and married Anne Butler “Brayne.  He returned to America on land granted to him in Spotsylvania county and continued development of the area with the help of German families that settled there. He organized the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe to claim land west of Blue Ridge for England.
